How To Build A Skate Box In 2 Hours

When building a skate box, here are some things you want handy.

1. Cordless Drill w/ Steel Drill Bits
   
2. Hammer
3. Measuring Tape
4. Square
5. Pencil and Pen
6. Chalk Line
7. Skill Saw
   

This box we are making today will be 5 foot long, 1 1/2 foot wide, and 1 foot high. You can change these measurements however you like.

Here are the supplies you will need:

• Four 2 by 4's cut at 5 feet
• Four 2 by 4's cut at 1 foot 6 inches
• Four 2 by 4's cut at 12 inches
• Two angle irons cut at 5 feet
• Handful of 2 1/2" screws (preferably)
• Some 1 1/2 inch deck screws
  

     Now, what I used for angle irons was actually from an old steel bed frame. If your lucky your mom is throwing out an old bed, or you can find one in the junk yard, or you can even ask some local steel shops for some scrap metal.

     If you don't have a zip cut (as seen below) to cut the angle irons you could get the guys at the steel shop to do it for you.Get them to cut it as long as your box will be (I cut mine at 5 foot).

     When building this box I used mostly nails -- only because I couldn't find screws.

     I suggest you use screws if you can. If you don't have any, no problem, you can always put them in later. Screws tend to keep things together longer, so if you have them, use them!

      Get together all the tools and supplies you need. You want to have everything in front of you and where you need it.

      In the picture to the side you'll see I have my bed frame angle irons there.

      Some have legs to them and need to be cut off. You're going to need a zip cut for that. Hopefully you have the bed frame angle irons without legs attached to them.

      The angle irons I used were a tad too long -- I had to cut about a foot off the end. Use a zip cut for that, or get the guys at the steel shop do do that for you if you don't have a zip cut.

      NOTE:

      If you don't have a zip cut, you could also use a steel saw. Hopefully your bed frame angle irons, or whatever angle irons you use, are not too thick. Then cutting through it won't take too long.

      You could obviously substitute a cordless drill for an electric drill, and I would actually recommend it if you're cutting through thick metal when drilling holes in the angle iron

You want to have two different sizes of drill bits:

1. One big enough for the screw to fit
2. And one that bigger than the head of the screw

We'll get into this later...

• The first thing you could do is cut four 2 by 4's @ 5 foot
• Next, cut four 2 by 4's @ 1 1/2 foot
• Then, four at 12 inches
  

      Once you've got all your pieces cut, you can go ahead and put your box together.

      You should be able to tell by looking at the picture above how I put mine together. It's pretty simple and basic.

     After you've got the entire frame put together, you're going to want to put supports in for the top...

      Put in enough supports to actually support you when you're olling onto the box. I only used 1/4 inch plywood sheet, but thicker wouldn't be a bad idea.

      Measure out your supports. Make sure they are all equally spaced out. Screw them in and let's move onto the plywood!

     Cut the plywood sheet as wide and as long as your box -- 5 foot by 1 1/2 foot.

     NOTE:

     This is where having a chalk line comes in handy. Use it, especially when you're screwing the plywood down.

     Once you're done with that, it's time to screw the angle irons in place...

      Put at least three screws in one each angle iron -- one on each end and one in the middle.

      Now that that's done, the only thing left to do is skate it!
